The Country Fire Authority has declared that this seasons Fire Danger Period will commence at 1:00am on Monday 12th November 2007. As of this date, no burning off is permitted at any time in the open air under any circumstances.
Residents living in bushfire prone areas are reminded to prepare their properties from the threat of fire.

Residents are also encouraged to clean up their properties of green waste. Vouchers are available from Council which entitle the user to free green waste disposal every Sunday from November 11th to December 9th 2007.

Preparation for a bushfire is essential to your survival.  The following are guidelines to assist you in your preparation:

  • Decide in advance what the trigger for your evacuation is.  Before you make the decision to stay with your home, make an objective assessment.  Have you carried out proper fuel reduction work around your home?  Do you have adequate fire-fighting equipment?  Are you physically fit and mentally prepared?  If the answer to all these questions is YES then you have greater confidence in your decision to stay with your home.
  • If you choose evacuation don't leave it to the last minute because roads can be blocked, visibility poor and heat radiation is at its peak.
  • Do not light fires in the open during high fire danger period.
  • Clear combustible material from around your house and rubbish from guttering
  • Make sure there is adequate water supply and that your garden hose reaches all points of your house and buildings
  • Check screens on doors, windows and external vents

If there is a fire, do:

  • Remain indoors.
  • Turn on your radio and tune to either Plenty Valley FM (88.6), 3INR FM (96.5) or 3AW AM (1278) to receive advice.  Emergency information signs have been erected throughout the municipality to assist residents by displaying the frequency of these radio stations.
  • Keep a torch, first aid kit, portable radio and spare batteries in a spot known to all the family as power may fail.
  • Know how and where to turn off electricity, gas and water at mains.
  • Secure your home (all doors and windows)

If there is a fire, don't:

  • Evacuate unless instructed or it is obvious to do so.  Use the telephone unless urgent or to report an important event.
  • Go sight-seeing - heavy traffic could prevent aid reaching those who urgently need it.
